History

Where It All Started

Aztech Group Director, Aaron Smith first came to Gunnedah in late 2010 to relocate equipment to Whitehaven Coal’s Sunnyside project.

After several months spent working in the area, meeting local colleagues and families, the town really resonated with Aaron and his wife Debbie. Gunnedah showed great potential and solid foundations—not only to start their business but also to raise their young family.

In May 2011, Aaron pursued his dream by establishing Aztech Earthmoving Repairs, a company dedicated to high-quality earth moving equipment repairs. Starting with just two employees and operating out of a Land Cruiser ute, times were certainly challenging as a small business owner. Sacrifices had to be made through mining downturns, droughts, and a highly competitive industry.

However, with determination, both Aaron and Debbie persisted in their commitment to growing their business from strength to strength while also raising four children.

Supported by the amazing local community, the Aztech team has transformed this dream—what started as a small family business—into a thriving enterprise. Aztech’s core values resonate through our people and within the community, and we could not be more proud of where we are as a business today.

Today, Aztech employs nearly 30 staff, including six apprentices and trainees, and remains committed to supporting and providing opportunities for local youth while upskilling our people. This dedication not only strengthens Aztech’s future but also secures the future of the earthmoving industry in Gunnedah.
